Because we are awesome!
No, but seriously there are many reasons why hiring a Doula may be right for you. Maybe you are a single mom and you would like a hand to hold during your labour. Perhaps you have many people to support you, but you would like someone with training and experience in labour and delivery. Or maybe you want to deliver naturally and are looking for someone who can help guide you through your labour journey. You may even be having a planned caesarean and wish to have more support for the nervous moments before and recovery afterwards, maybe even with you in the operating room.
Perhaps the biggest reason everyone can benefit from having a Doula with them during delivery is that Doulas have a great impact on decreasing negative outcomes with birth.
"25% decrease in the risk of Cesarean; the largest effect was seen with a doula (39% decrease)*
8% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth; the largest effect was seen with a doula (15% increase)*
10% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief; the type of person providing continuous support did not make a difference
Shorter labors by 41 minutes on average; there is no data on if the type of person providing continuous support makes a difference
38% decrease in the baby’s risk of a low five minute Apgar score; there is no data on if the type of person providing continuous support makes a difference
31% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience; mothers’ risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience was reduced with continuous support provided by a doula or someone in their social network (family or friend), but not hospital staff"
Here are some of biggest benefits to Doula care:
1. We are with you for your whole labour. No shift change! From the moment you call them to your labour to shortly after you have welcomed your bundle of joy to the world, your Doula is there with you. Continuous support!
2. We have tools and tricks to help try and avoid further interventions. Hip squeezes and relaxation techniques and positions galore! We have been trained and have researched techniques and facts that will help you progress through your labour. They may not all work for you and not every birth is the same but we can use these first before we progress to other means. Some of these methods your health care team may know, some they may not. Your Doula is there to help suggest them at the best time.
3. Our agenda is only about you. You health care team cares about your health and babies health (which is suuuper important). Your partner or family or friends care about you and baby but they can only do so much and may not have the emotional separation needed. Your Doula is there to help you and only you through this enormous task. We are not overwhelmed emotionally when things go wrong as your family would be. So, this means, we can help keep the room calm and provide support and help everyone get the information needed.
4. We have training and expertise in many areas! There are many moments of uncertainty even if you know a lot about babies birth and beyond. Before you turn to Google you can ask your Doula first and save yourself the time finding reliable information.
In the end there are many reasons why you may hire a Doula. If it is something you are considering, book a consultation with a local Doula (or two) to see how they can help you and make your own decision.
